SIL registration deadline: 1 October 2026 is the date unregistered providers stop

From 1 July 2026, supported independent living (SIL) became a mandatory registration category with the NDIS Commission. Providers who were not already registered were given a transition window rather than an immediate cut-off — but that window closes on 1 October 2026.

The NDIS Commission is explicit about what happens after that date: a provider who has not applied for registration by 1 October 2026 must stop delivering SIL supports. SIL is defined as ongoing, higher-needs home and living support — assistance or supervision with daily life tasks provided at all or most times of the day, managed and delivered by the provider. It does not capture a person receiving a few hours of support a week, or someone who chooses and directly manages their own support workers.

This is a hard date for a specific group: providers currently delivering SIL who are unregistered and have not lodged an application. A provider who applied before 1 July 2026, or who is already registered under the previous SIL support item (0115), follows a different transition pathway and is not automatically affected by the 1 October cut-off. If in doubt, the practical test is simple — ask the provider directly whether they are registered, or have applied, for supported independent living.

For participants and families, the deadline matters most if a current SIL provider has not confirmed either registration or a lodged application. After 1 October 2026, a participant using an unregistered SIL provider will need to move to a registered one to keep receiving those supports without interruption — a conversation worth having with a support coordinator well before the date, not after it.
